Adriana J. van Heelsum
Anja van Heelsum (MA social psychology, PhD social-cultural sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) wrote her PhD on 'The ethno-cultural position of the second- generation Surinamese'.
She worked as researcher at the department of social research methodology and at the department of organisational psychology of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, at the Werkgroep 2000 and at IMES.

Since 1997 she has been involved in IMES-projects in the field of migrant organisations and political participation. Projects on migrantorganisations and their networks are:

- Volunteering and citizenship of immigrants.
- Networks of Surinamese, Ghanaian, Moroccan and Turkish organizations in Amsterdam
- National networks of migrant organisations The research on "Turkish organisations in the Netherlands" was used for the TV series of NPS "De vele gezichten van Turks Nederland" . The research on "Moroccan organisations in the Netherlands was used for the TV series of NPS "De vele gezichten van Marokkaans Nederland". On "Surinamese organisations in the Netherlands" there was only a publication.
- Moroccan organisations: new trends and developments
- Migrant organisations: why and how they develop (3.II) for FORUM.
- Muslim organisations in the Netherlands (3.I)
- And currently: Transnational ties of Moroccan associations (3.16)

Projects on political participation of migrants were:

- Voting behaviour of migrants in the local elections of 1998
- Evaluation of the minority policy of the Municipal council of East Amsterdam
- The role of migrant politicians in "Political Participation of Migrants"
- And currently: Turn out and voting behaviour of immigrants in the municipal elections of 2006
